Mehlareng Mall Opening

Mehlareng Mall: A Milestone in Development for the Batau Ba Seloane Community

Last Updated on December 18, 2024 by Batau

As the Batau Ba Seloane Traditional Council, we are proud to witness the opening of Mehlareng Mall, a development that speaks to the heart of progress and community empowerment. Situated within the lands tied to our rich heritage, Mehlareng Mall opened its doors in late November, offering vital services to the communities of Ga-Seloane and the surrounding Zebediela areas.

Anchored by well-known brands like Shoprite and Cashbuild, this 10,000sqm shopping center brings unmatched convenience to our people. The inclusion of banking facilities with ATMs from three of South Africa’s leading banks, alongside affordable fashion outlets like Mr Price and Pepkor, ensures that families have access to both essential and lifestyle services closer to home.

This development, a partnership between McCormick Property Development (MPD) and Kubela Properties, aligns with the vision we hold as custodians of Seloane land—investing in opportunities that uplift and enrich our communities. By bringing formal retail infrastructure to rural and township areas, Mehlareng Mall serves as a beacon of economic growth, creating jobs and alleviating the financial burden of traveling long distances for basic needs.

“We are committed to building malls that integrate into and serve the unique needs of the communities they stand in,” says Jason McCormick, Managing Director of MPD. Mehlareng Mall is a testament to this approach, reflecting the culture and aspirations of our people while ensuring the benefits of modern conveniences.

Architecturally, Mehlareng Mall stands as a symbol of transformation. Designed by Living Planet Architects, the mall’s spacious layout, natural lighting, and inviting entrances provide a welcoming atmosphere for shoppers. The vibrant orange and green motifs seen throughout the mall reflect a spirit of energy and hope, a fitting representation of the opportunities it brings to the people of our region.

For many families, the completion of Mehlareng Mall in just seven months is a lifeline. It eliminates the need for our people to travel between 60 and 70 kilometers to access towns for their daily necessities. This not only saves time and money but also ensures that resources once spent on travel can now be redirected toward improving livelihoods.

As Batau Ba Seloane Traditional Council, we recognize Mehlareng Mall as more than just a retail hub—it is a platform for progress. It marks a step forward in building the kind of self-sufficient and thriving communities that honor our heritage while embracing growth.

We invite all members of the Batau Ba Seloane community to make full use of this new development, as we continue to stand united in pursuit of a brighter future for our people.
